About the Program:
Ohio University, through the expertise of its faculty and staff in the Ohio Program of Intensive English (OPIE), the Department of Linguistics in the College of Arts and Sciences, and the renowned Patton College of Education, offers to the Ministry of Education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) a twelve-month program titled, Building Leadership for Change through School Immersion: The Ohio Experience (BLCTSI: OHIO), in order to strengthen the values, skills, knowledge, and attitudes of KSA teachers through professional training seminars, English language classes, and structured immersion in outstanding Ohio K-12 school systems.
Total Participants: Currently, the program includes 42 educators and their families (92 dependents), for a total of 139 guests from Saudi Arabia at Ohio University.
BLCTSI: OHIO is a transformative program that consists of five phases:
A one- week period of orientation that provided the participants with an introduction to Ohio University, the city of Athens, The Ohio Program of Intensive English, The Patton College of Education, and the various services available on campus such as health care, emergency services, housing, and safety.
This consists of an intensive English as Second Language (ESL) Program with focus on English for Academic Purposes (EAP). Participants will receive twenty-four hours of English instruction and cultural training per week.
This phase focuses on building the technical knowledge and expertise of the KSA participants. That phase will consist of a series of course seminars in pedagogy, leadership and technology at The Patton College of Education. This will be supplemented by language classes and mentoring sessions.
The fourth phase will be an immersive experience in public schools in the Southeast and Central Ohio region. Participants will have their job shadowing/internship in school districts like Athens, Alexander, Federal Hocking, and Vinton.
The KSA participants will present their capstone projects, receive feedback from mentors and peers, and make final refinements before implementation in their home school districts, in Saudi Arabia.
