GPA-OHIO-THAILAND 2016

With the support of a Fulbright-Hays grant from the U.S. Department of Education, pre-service and in-service teachers can now expose themselves to Thai culture in this intensive and rewarding six-week program through the Patton College of Education.  According to studyabroad101.com, “Approximately 1,900 American students study abroad in Thailand each year making Thailand the most popular study abroad destination in Southeast Asia.”

Participants will travel through various part of Thailand, complete 30 hours of Thai language instruction and an instructional materials development workshop, conduct cross-cultural teaching, collaborate with local groups in service learning projects and engage in informal chat sessions 3 times a week and 90 hours of classroom teaching in Thai culture, education, historical values and society.

 

Additionally, participants will spend some time living in a Hill-tribe village and enjoy excursions/field trips including cultural and educational tours of schools, libraries, museums, religious places, outdoor markets, community events, public offices, and other sites that provide participants an authentic experience of the Thai people and their daily lives.  Participants will develop grade-level appropriate thematic units over the course of their stay in Thailand.

 

Pre-service and in-service teachers will have the opportunity to develop lesson plans and teaching strategies that integrate Thai culture, society and language in the Arts, English and Social Studies classes.

Eligibility

Program is open to Ohio University graduate and undergraduate students as well as in-service professionals.  Graduate students must have at least a 3.0 GPA, while undergraduate applicants must be above 2.25 GPA. Please check below for application procedures.

Students who will be on probation at any point during the program for a judicial offense that took place less than a calendar year from the program start date may not study abroad.  Click here to read the entire judicial policy.

 

Application process for Ohio University students

1)  Apply through the Office of Global Opportunities.
2)  A letter of reference from a faculty member is required.
3)  Submit a 500-1000 word essay that speaks to your motivation, readiness and aptitude for intercultural study abroad.
4)  Commit to participate in a 30-hour Pre-travel Seminar “Introduction to Culture in Context,” April 2016. Seminar will take place on Saturdays.
5)  Commit to participate in a 30-hour Post-travel Seminar “Transcultural Competence: The Thailand Context,” August 2016. Seminar will take place on Saturdays.
6)  Commit to share their experience after the program with other pre-service and in-service teachers, members of one’s school district and the community at-large.

 

Application process for In-Service Professionals

1)  Apply through the Office of Global Opportunities.
2)  Select “Non-Ohio University Student” option and submit your entire application in one log-in session.
3)   In-service teacher participants should submit a letter from their school principal or district administrator.  The letter should address the participant’s readiness for participation in the project as well as the instructional, curricular and leadership potential of the participant.

Living Arrangements

Students will live in shared rooms at the Thonburi Sport Club apartments. Each room has a private bathroom. The facility includes an elevator, washer and dryer, free Internet access and common wifi room. In addition, participants will have access to an on-site restaurant, pool, fitness center and tennis court.  The property has a 24/7 security guard on site. A total of $40 is earmarked for daily meals of participants.

 

Courses and Credits

In-service teachers will not earn credits on this program.  Pre-service student participants will earn 6 credits with the possibility of the following coursework:

•   EDTE 4900 (1-15 credits): Special Topics in Education – Teacher Education
•   EDAD 5900 (1-6 credits): Special Topics in Education

•   EDTE 5900 (1-15 credits): Special Topics in Education – Teacher Education
•   EDAD 5910 (1-6 credits): Internship
•   EDTE 5910 (1-2 credits): Internship
•   EDAD 6021 (4 credits): The School and Community
•   EDAD 6900 (1-15 credits): Special Topics in Education Administration
•   EDTE 6900 (1-15 credits): Special Topics in Education – Teacher Education
•   EDAD 7900 (1-6 credits): Special Topics in Education Administration
•   EDAD 7915 (1-6 credits): Advanced Seminar in Education
•   EDTE 8930 (1-8 credits): Independent Study in Education

Entry and Exit Requirements

U.S. citizens are required to have a valid U.S. passport when traveling outside of the United States. If you plan to study or travel abroad in the next year, apply for your passport. Some countries also require a visa to legally enter and reside in the country. Entry and exit requirements for Thailand can be found  here.

 

U.S. citizens   do not   need a visa or other special documents to enter the country for the length of this program. You may need to show sufficient funds to support yourself while in-country. Please also note that visa requirements may vary if you plan to stay in the country longer than the program dates or travel to other countries during or after the program. Please familiarize yourself with these recommendations and requirements prior to applying to a program.
